Castlevania: Lords of Shadows is occasionally beautiful, occasionally exciting, and occasionally rewarding. However, to fully enjoy its best parts, you must endure a handful of drab settings and boring stealth puzzles along the way. At times, it's enough to make you want to put the controller down. But stick around until the end, and you'll enjoy a satisfying reward of eye-catching boss fights and a satisfying conclusion that ultimately diminishes the negative impact of the game's earlier issues. Lords of Shadow 2's story should resonate with anyone with a continuing interest in the series' narrative, and even though the ending won't hit newcomers as hard, the occasionally fantastic environments and monsters create a worthwhile experience that stands tall on its own by the end of the tale.

Following 2010's Castlevania reboot and last year's spin-off Mirror of Fate, the Lords of Shadow saga comes to a conclusion with Lords of Shadow 2, the final chapter in Gabriel Belmont's story. Now taking the moniker of Dracula, does Gabriel's story end with a bloody good romp? Or does it just suck?

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 seems like a major step backward, a game that has taken far too many cues from its contemporaries in an attempt to please as many people as possible. While some of these changes like going from a linear campaign to a non-linear open world, for instance prove largely successful, other changes, such as the addition of unseemly stealth sections and an underwhelming modern-day setting, have significantly harmed the final product.

When Lords of Shadow first debuted it received some polarized comments. Reviewers claimed it was the first time Castlevania was taken seriously while others brushed it off as a poor attempt of being a God of War clone. The grand finale solves the old problems, and adds some new.
Give credit to MercurySteam where it's due: it knows how to hide its loading times. Platforms shift, powered by bungalow-sized cogs. Intricate mechanisms fire, transforming the room around you. A wolf leads you through a bloody, chattering mist. You, erm, flip a power switch. All these things could have been a loading screen, but after the "this isn't Castlevania!" criticisms levelled at the first game, Lords of Shadow is determined to keep this world intact, and explorable. The answer is some short waits, filled with feats of architecture and arcane engineering.
